Gold Loan Rules: What Borrowers Should Check
Loan-to-value limits, valuation method, repayment structures and auction terms — the four things that decide whether a gold loan goes well.
Gold loans are among the fastest ways to raise money against an asset most Indian households already own. They are also secured against jewellery that is often irreplaceable, which is a good reason to read the terms carefully.
1. Loan-to-value
The RBI caps the LTV ratio lenders may offer against gold jewellery. Within that cap, lenders set their own policy. A higher LTV means more money now and less headroom if prices fall.
Lenders value gold content only — stones, enamel and non-gold weight are excluded. That is the most common reason a valuation comes in below what a borrower expected.
2. How the valuation is struck
Lenders typically value against an average of recent gold prices rather than the day's headline rate. This smooths volatility and protects the lender, and it means your valuation may look conservative on a day when prices have just risen sharply.
3. Repayment structure
- EMI — principal and interest through the tenure.
- Interest-only servicing with a bullet principal repayment.
- Full bullet — everything at maturity.
Bullet structures feel cheaper month to month and are where borrowers most often get into trouble. Compare the annualised cost, and include processing and valuation fees.
4. Margin calls and auction
If gold prices fall sharply, some lenders require partial repayment or additional collateral. On default, the lender can auction the pledged gold after the notice process set out in the agreement.
Before signing, confirm in writing: the recorded purity and weight, storage and insurance arrangements, prepayment and foreclosure charges, and the notice period before any auction.
The honest framing
A gold loan is a good bridge for a short, defined need with a clear repayment plan. It is a poor way to fund an open-ended shortfall, because the collateral is family jewellery.
