Digital Gold: What Regulators Have and Have Not Said

App-based gold is convenient and popular. It also sits outside the regulatory perimeter that covers ETFs and sovereign bonds — a difference worth understanding.

GoldVarta DeskPublished

Digital gold lets you buy fractional quantities through an app, with the metal held in a vault by a provider. The convenience is real. So is a structural difference most buyers are not told about.

What you own

Not metal in your possession, but a claim on a provider who holds gold on your behalf. The provider undertakes to store it, to allow you to sell it back, and in many schemes to deliver physical metal above a threshold quantity.

The regulatory position

Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds are SEBI-regulated products with mandated disclosure, custodial rules and audited holdings. Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities.

Digital gold, as commonly offered through payment and broking apps, has not been brought under an equivalent product-level regulatory framework. Regulators have at times cautioned intermediaries about distributing it. That does not mean providers are unsound — it means the protections you may assume are present are not the same ones that cover a regulated fund.

Costs to look for

  • The spread between the buy and sell price quoted in the app
  • GST on purchase
  • Storage charges after the initial free period in many schemes
  • Delivery charges and minimum quantities for physical conversion

Those costs are easy to overlook when the purchase amount is small, and they matter proportionally more on small tickets.

Sensible questions before buying

  • Who vaults the metal, and is the holding independently audited?
  • Is the gold allocated to me specifically, or held on a pooled basis?
  • What is the sell-back spread today, not just the headline buy price?
  • What happens to my holding if the provider ceases operations?

The alternatives

If the goal is regulated, low-cost gold exposure, ETFs and gold funds do that job. If the goal is possession, buy hallmarked coins or bars. Digital gold's genuine advantage is tiny-ticket accumulation — worth using with the trade-off understood.
