Physical Gold vs Digital Gold

Coins and jewellery versus app-based digital gold: cost, custody, liquidity, taxation and the counterparty question.

Both give you exposure to the gold price. They differ in what you actually hold.

Physical gold

What you own: metal, in your possession.

  • Costs: making charges on jewellery (unrecoverable), a smaller premium on coins and bars, plus storage — a bank locker has an annual fee.
  • Liquidity: sell to a jeweller or dealer; expect a deduction from the day's rate.
  • Risk: theft and loss. Purity disputes if the piece is not hallmarked.
  • Advantage: no counterparty. It is yours regardless of what any company does.

Digital gold

What you own: a claim on gold held in a vault by a provider, bought in amounts as small as a rupee through apps and payment platforms.

  • Costs: a spread between buy and sell price, plus GST on purchase, plus storage charges after an initial free period in many schemes.
  • Liquidity: sell back in-app, usually instantly. Many providers allow conversion into physical delivery above a threshold.
  • Risk: counterparty and regulatory. Digital gold is not currently regulated by SEBI or the RBI as a distinct product. You are relying on the provider and its vaulting arrangements. This is the single most important thing to understand before buying.
  • Advantage: tiny ticket sizes, no storage headache, easy systematic accumulation.

The regulated alternatives

If your goal is investment exposure rather than possession, gold ETFs and gold funds are SEBI-regulated, exchange-traded and transparent on cost. Sovereign Gold Bonds, where available, carry a government guarantee and pay interest. These sit in a different risk category from digital gold.

Choosing

  • Want to wear it, or want physical possession? Physical.
  • Want small, regular, cost-efficient accumulation with regulatory oversight? ETFs or funds.
  • Want tiny-ticket convenience and accept provider risk? Digital gold, with eyes open.
