How International Gold Prices Affect India

Global spot, the rupee and import duty are the three levers. Here is how each one reaches your local rate.

India imports almost all the gold it consumes, so the domestic price is essentially an imported price with local adjustments.

Lever 1 — Global spot

Gold is quoted in USD per troy ounce. The main global drivers are:

  • Real interest rates. Gold pays no yield, so when inflation-adjusted rates rise, gold usually gets less attractive.
  • The US dollar. A stronger dollar generally weighs on dollar-denominated gold.
  • Central bank buying. Sustained official-sector purchases have been a meaningful source of demand.
  • Risk events. Geopolitical and financial stress reliably lifts safe-haven demand.

Lever 2 — The rupee

Every dollar move is translated at the USD-INR rate. A depreciating rupee raises the rupee cost of the same ounce of gold. Indian investors have repeatedly seen domestic gold hold up better than global gold during rupee weakness — the currency move cushions, or amplifies, the underlying price.

Lever 3 — Import duty and levies

Customs duty and cess are added to the landed cost. Budget changes to duty have historically produced immediate, visible jumps or drops in retail prices with no corresponding move in global spot.

Putting it together

Approximate domestic benchmark:

₹/gram ≈ (USD/oz × USD-INR ÷ 31.1035) + duties and levies + local premium

Why your city rate can move when global gold does not

Two reasons. First, currency: the rupee moved. Second, local premium: festival or wedding demand can push physical premiums up even in a flat global market. That is also why Chennai, Kochi and Delhi rarely print identical numbers on the same morning.

What to watch

The dollar index, US real yields, USD-INR, and any Budget or notification changing import duty. Those four explain most of the day-to-day surprises.
